Chapter Thirteen

The morning of Nicole’s funeral dawned and, as I pulled open my bedroom curtains, I smiled a little, relieved to see a perfectly clear blue sky and warm sun over the city. Knowing how much she wanted today to be a celebration, I’d fervently prayed for good weather during the week since her death. Dark clouds and rain just wouldn’t have been right on a day when my sister wanted to see smiles, bright colours and for people to remember her with love and laughter, not tears.

I just hoped I was going to be able to hold myself together and give her that day, without breaking down.

I’d barely slept a wink since I’d crept back to my bedroom from hers, after discovering her secret list just hours before. Lying awake, my mind had raced from thought to thought and emotion to emotion. I’d imagined Nicole sitting up late in her room, typing the list, determined that her life after a transplant would be so dramatically different to her life before. Did she smile as she typed it? Did she giggle as she dreamt up some of the funny ones, like, ‘Fart in a lift’ and ‘Go skinny-dipping’? Had she become emotional, imagining herself fit and well, climbing the Eiffel Tower?

I hoped so much she trusted our twin bond would guide me to it.

The same mix of emotions continued to surge through me that I’d felt the night before – the anger she hadn’t been able to make her own dreams come true, but at the same time a deep-rooted resolve in my heart that I would do it all for her.

As I showered and dried my hair, I thought about whether to tell anyone else yet. For these last few hours, it had been mine and Nicole’s little secret, but I knew it couldn’t stay that way. And while I loved having this final bond with her, I wanted to share it with everyone else who loved her too. I knew it would mean so much to them, and I also knew I was going to need all the help I could get to complete her list. If I’m honest, I was beginning to feel a bit daunted at how much there was to do. I wanted to fulfil the list right down to the last, smallest wish. I decided to tell just Mum, Dad, Gary, Laura and Kelly that morning, hoping it would lift their spirits a bit and help them through the day ahead. There would be plenty of time in the days and weeks ahead to tell other people.

Over breakfast, I shared the news of
